Congratulations to graduate student, Yen-Ming Huang who successfully defended his dissertation and started a new job as a tenure-track Assistant Professor at South Dakota State College of Pharmacy.
Dr. Shiyanbola and graduate student, Deepika Rao have been invited with collaborators (Unni and Sharp) to the International Conference on Communication in Healthcare/ Health Literacy Annual Research Conference in San Diego to present a symposium on “Patient engagement in the self-management of type 2 diabetes; Lessons learned from various stakeholders”.
Congratulations to graduate student, Deepika Rao whose abstract was accepted for an oral/podium presentation at the International Conference on Communication in Healthcare/ Health Literacy Annual Research Conference in San Diego.
She will be presenting on “A Mixed Methods Study of Changes in Medication Adherence Over Time among Blacks with Type II Diabetes”
We are happy to report that graduate student, Yen-Ming Huang and Researcher, Martha Maurer also have accepted abstracts for posters at the International Conference on Communication in Healthcare/ Health Literacy Annual Research Conference in San Diego.
Huang will present on “A mixed methods approach to investigating the barriers and facilitators of medication adherence in patients with type 2 diabetes across different health literacy levels” and Maurer will present on “Preliminary results from a mixed methods randomized controlled trial: Addressing Health literacy, beliefs, adherence and self-efficacy (ADHERE) program to improve diabetes outcomes”.
We welcomed two J1 visiting summer research scholars, Jo-Hsin Chen and Meng-Jung Wen from Taipei Medical University College of Pharmacy who will be spending the summer with our research group learning about Medication Use Experiences among Patients with Chronic Diseases.
Dr Shiyanbola (PI), and Collaborators, Dr. Ward (Nursing/Morbridge Center), Dr. Lee ( Family Medicine/Access Community Health Center), and Dr. Sharp (UIC College of Pharmacy) have received a two-year grant from the Contemporary Social Problems Initiative.
This grant will use peer support, education and behavioral-skill building to engage, empower and motivate African Americans with diabetes towards improved medication adherence. Face to face meetings and mobile phone/app technology will be used for the implementation of this intervention in Madison and Milwaukee. See news release.
