Arash Bashirullah, associate professor in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Division, is part of the U.S. delegation attending the fourteenth Japanese-American Frontiers of Science symposium.

Co-sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the symposium series is the Academy’s premiere activity for distinguished young scientists. Bashirullah’s research focus is the regulation of tissue remodeling during post-embryonic development.

Attendees are selected by a committee of Academy members from among young researchers who have already made recognized contributions to science, including recipients of major national fellowships and awards and who have been identified as future leaders in science. Since its inception in 1989, more than one hundred seventy of its “alumni” have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and ten have been awarded Nobel Prizes.

In addition to formal sessions, the symposium format fosters informal discussions, including poster sessions that further enlarge the scope of the fields covered by the symposium. This year’s event will be held December 5-7, 2014 in Tokyo, Japan.
