Personal Updates and Check-Ins

Kate Gainer (PharmD ’04): “After serving as CEO of the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA) since 2012, I stepped down from that leadership position in June 2025. This transition timeline took approximately eight months, and the succession plan went smoothly for IPA.

During my 14 years as IPA’s CEO, IPA passed monumental legislation including a modernized pharmacy practice act with the standard of care regulatory framework and full practice authority; meaningful PBM reform with a reimbursement floor for pharmacies; as well as growth in membership, continued collaboration with key stakeholders, and strengthened financials.

In stepping down from this position, I am not immediately starting a new role. With intention, I am taking a professional pause.

IPA shares a deep history and collaboration with colleagues from Wisconsin, including the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin and UW–Madison.

My education at UW has been a pillar in my professional development. I moved to Iowa with the intention of moving back to Wisconsin after 12 months to complete a PGY1 residency. Here I am 21 years later, and I’m grateful for all of it!

Also, I’m typing this update from St. Germain, Wisconsin, where we spend our summers.”

Elliot Sogol

Elliott Sogol (BS ’79, MS ’81, PhD ’84): “I had the opportunity to teach a one-week immersion course in Belfast, Ireland. The course was on conflict resolution and the impact on healthcare. We met with various leaders in the area, from nonprofits to political associations to government officials.”
