School alumnus Phil Berce receives national excellence award

Phil Berce, an 1982 graduate and owner of Good Value Pharmacy, Kenosha, Wis. will be honored with a Health Mart® Community Healthcare Excellence Award for consistently providing care and services that add measurable value to patient health care and community wellness.

Good Value Pharmacy is one of 10 pharmacies across the country to be receiving this prestigious award, which will be presented at the Kenosha pharmacy on Thursday, June 19, 2014 during a visit from the Health Mart® Healthy Living Tour, which will offer complimentary health screenings from 3:00-6:00 p.m.

Phil graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy with the class of ‘82. After school he went to work for K-Mart Corporation for the next 13 years and in 1996 he joined Good Value Pharmacy and in 2001 became the owner of what is now the last remaining independently-owned pharmacy in Kenosha. Today, Phil owns three retail locations and a long-term care pharmacy and it’s a true family business. His two sons, Alex and Philip followed in his footsteps and attended University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy (class of ’12 and expected class of ‘15) and work closely with Phil at the pharmacy. Additionally, his third son, Jake, helps out in the summer when he’s not teaching.

Not only are the retail locations full-service pharmacies that offers prescription filling, but they also offers medical therapy management, free home delivery, immunizations and counseling. Phil and his staff have also made customer service a top priority.

“My favorite part of my job is connecting with my patients,” said Phil Berce, Owner of Good Value Pharmacy. “Being able to stand at the counter and hear about a patient’s life is important to me. I want all my patients to feel comfortable enough that if they need a prescription dropped off at eight o’clock at night, they will call my cell phone.”

Over the years, the pharmacy has continued to be involved with the community. Most recently, Phil has become a member of the Kenosha County Care Transition Coalition, the Falls Coalition, which helps to prevent falls among the elderly, and has made contributions towards a benefit in July for the Aging Disorder Recourse Center to help people understand Medicare Part D.

“Health Mart® pharmacies fill a gap in today’s busy healthcare system by providing broader access to clinical services and medication counseling, and our pharmacists often serve as the first point of care for everyone from new parents to grandparents,” said Chuck Wilson, Health Mart® Vice President. “We recognize that issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity are serious epidemics affecting millions of Americans, and these 10 pharmacies have proven themselves as go-to resources for those in their community managing these diseases.”

The Health Mart® Community Healthcare Excellence Award program is a component of the Health Mart Healthy Living Tour, which is on the road to celebrate and recognize community pharmacists for the important role they play as trusted healthcare providers in their communities—helping to educate and counsel on a variety of conditions that can be better managed with the help of a pharmacist. The Tour will conduct more than 130 health screening events at Health Mart® Pharmacies across the country. Along the way, the Tour will identify people at risk for various health conditions and encourage them to manage these conditions with the help of a pharmacist. The health screenings will target risks associated with high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity.
