Thank you for your interest in our Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD program. Please see below some information that will help you understand the financial support we provide, and expenses directly associated with enrollment.
Our support:
- Stipend for 2024-25: $36,000 per year (usually increased yearly in July)
- 1st year welcome award for 2024-25: $2,000
- Tuition is paid on your behalf
- Contribution toward UW Group Health Insurance premium
Student expenses:
UW-Madison-charged segregated fees (“seg fees”)
Segregated fees cover bus pass, gym, use of University Health Services and other services.*

- Non-dissertator (usually first 2 years in program): approximately $1,100-1,800 per year (depends on credit load)
- Dissertator (after prelim): approximately $930 per year
* Some fellowships (such as those we usually use to support students in their first semester in our program) cover seg fees. Training grant appointments usually cover seg fees.
UW–Madison-charged document fee
This is a one time $130 charge which covers future transcript orders, degree verifications, and more. Learn more about the document fee.
International Student Fee
Charged to Students on F1 or J1 visas: This $100 per semester fee funds UW–Madison’s International Student Services (ISS). Learn more about ISS.
Health Insurance premiums paid by you
(Only applied if a student chooses to utilize UW Group Health Insurance)

- Optional uniform dental coverage: Additional $3 per month (single); $10 per month (family)
- Optional DeltaVision Insurance: Additional $5.72 per month (single) up to $20.58 per month (family)
