2016 PharmD graduates Mike Nagy, PGY-1 resident at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital (VA), Madison, Scott Pearson, PGY-1 resident at the University of Colorado Hospital, Aurora, Colo. and their faculty mentors, Andrea Porter, associate professor (CHS) in the Pharmacy Practice Division, UW-Madison, and Joel Marrs, associate professor, Department of Clinical Pharmacy, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Colorado, have been selected as 2017 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Walmart Scholars.

The program pairs a mentor and trainee to help guide trainees during the meeting and also develop long term teaching goals. Nagy has worked with Porter more than three years in multiple capacities including research, teaching in pharmacotherapy labs, as well as clinically at the VA. “I look forward to continuing our mentor/mentee relationship as I develop my own clinical and academic practice,” said Nagy. “This program will help pursue my long term goals in academia and I also hope to bring back what I learn to improve my clinical practice when coordinating our VALOR internship program next year, as well as, when serving as a preceptor for Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience(IPPE) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) students. “I am looking forward to the conference and to gaining some more exposure to academia and faculty life,” noted Pearson.

Nagy and Pearson, along with mentors Porter and Marrs are among 85 students and faculty mentors who will receive $1,000 travel scholarships to attend the AACP Annual Meeting and the AACP Teachers Seminar in Nashville, Tenn. from July 15-19.
