The Urdang Lab, led by Dr. Lucas Richert, is dedicated to the study of medicine, pharmacy, and society using multiple lenses and methodologies. History and historical frameworks act as key anchors in the Lab’s research, teaching, and service activities — even as Richert and the larger lab are dedicated to transdisciplinarity and engaging contemporary problems.
Professor Lucas Richert holds the George Urdang Chair in Pharmacy History. In addition, he serves as the Executive Director of the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy, the organization that Urdang co-founded in 1941.
Richert is a historian of medicine and pharmacy, who focuses on legal and illegal drugs, drug science and technology, alternative therapies, and mental health. He has studied and worked in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The Lab attempts to honor that pursuit and Urdang’s legacy. You can visit Richert’s curriculum vitae to learn more.
The Lab is named after George Urdang, a pioneering historian-pharmacist who fled Nazi Germany in the late-1930s. Urdang dedicated his life to pursuing a deeper understanding of medicines and pharmacy in society.
