Characterizing the individual and interactive effects of cannabis and alcohol on driving performance and informing strategies for impairment detection

Dr. Tory Spindle, PhD, an Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, utilizes human laboratory studies to characterize the behavioral pharmacology of cannabis and other drugs of abuse. This talk will focus on several of his studies which seek to characterize how different forms of cannabis (e.g., oral, vaporized) impact simulated driving performance, when used alone and in combination with alcohol, and to examine the sensitivity of different behavioral and biological methods for impairment detection. Additionally, he will discuss other recent projects, including one focused on comparing the effects of delta-9 and delta-8 THC on driving performance and various studies which systematically examined how cannabis product features (e.g., route of administration, dose, product formulation) affect pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Finally, he will describe lessons learned from his journey to build a program of driving simulator research and an ongoing initiative to standardized driving outcomes to facilitate data harmonization across laboratories.
