New Jobs/Positions
Maya Boguslawski (PharmD ’23) moved to Waterloo, Iowa, to start a residency at Greenwood Pharmacy through the University of Iowa’s PGY-1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency program.
Drew Dretske (PharmD ’20, MS ’22) was recently promoted to outpatient pharmacy director at Children’s Health in Dallas, Texas. Prior to this role, he served as the specialty pharmacy manager.
Cecilia Volk (PharmD ’20) is starting a new role as assistant professor in the UW–Madison School of Pharmacy’s Pharmacy Practice and Translational Research Division.
Ed Portillo (PharmD ’14) has been promoted to associate professor in the UW–Madison School of Pharmacy’s Pharmacy Practice and Translational Research Division.
Jocelyn Graening (Kerl) (PharmD ’12) took a new job as a clinical pharmacist at Quartz Health Solutions.
Amanda Margolis (PharmD ’09, MS ’17) has been promoted to associate professor in the UW–Madison School of Pharmacy’s Pharmacy Practice and Translational Research Division.
Eileen Murphy (PharmD ’06) has been selected as director of pharmacy for Security Health Plan of Wisconsin.
Mike Gillard (BS ’93, PharmD ’96): “After nearly 15 years as a manager of pharmacy operations in a small suburban hospital affiliated with a large health system, I’ve moved on to become the residency program director for Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, part of Advocate Aurora Health. The PGY-1 program consists of 18 residents and is a wonderful opportunity to do something I am passionate about!!”
Jim Korson (BS ’86) has been promoted to director of ancillary services and pharmacy for Western Wisconsin Health.
Accomplishments and Awards
Jessica Wedel (PharmD ’18) earned the designation Certified Specialty Pharmacist (CSP).
Laurel Legenza (PharmD ’13) has been selected as a 2023 UW BIRCWH (Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health) Fellow.
Melissa Ha (PharmD ’12) has been named one of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy’s 2023 Distinguished Preceptors.
Jason Bergsbaken (PharmD ’12) has been elected to a three-year term on the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) Board of Directors.
Nick Ladell (PharmD ’11) has been elected 2023-24 treasurer of the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin.
Hailey Soni (PharmD ’10) is honored with the student and PGY1 Residency Preceptor of the Year awards from the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) College of Pharmacy. She serves as a clinical assistant professor in the UIC Department of Pharmacy Practice.
Kate Schaafsma (MS ’09) has been inducted as a 2023 fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
Jordan Dow (PharmD ’08, MS ’10) has been inducted as a 2023 fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
Katherine Miller (PharmD ’08) has been elected chair-elect of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacy’s Section of Pharmacy Practice Leaders.
Jeanine Abrons (MS ’08) earned the 2023 Diversity Catalyst Award from the University of Iowa.
Drea Maier (PharmD ’07) has been selected as the 2023-24 representative of Region A for the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin.
Ryan Miller (PharmD ’07) has been elected 2023-24 president of the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin.
Dave Hager (PharmD ’05) has been inducted as a 2023 fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
Marnie Wickizer (PharmD ’03) has been honored with the 2023 Individual Contributor Award from the Association of Managed Care Pharmacy.
Julie Dagam (BS ’98, PharmD ’99) earned the Award of Excellence from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Board of Directors.
Julie Thiel (BS ’98) has been elected 2023-24 director-at-large of the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin.
Nicole Schreiner (BS ’97, PharmD ’98) earned the 2023 Bowl of Hygeia Award from the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin.
Diane Erdman (BS ’96, PharmD ’97) has been selected as the 2023-24 Region E representative with the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin.
Neil MacKinnon (MS ’95) has been inducted as a 2023 fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
Jeffrey Fish (BS ’91) was named 2023 Pharmacist of the Year by the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin.
Al Loeb (MS ’80) received the 2023 Distinguished Service Award from the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin.
Gerry Hancock (BS ’73) is receiving the 2023 Frank Lamping Community Service Award for his contributions to Union Grove, Wis.
Philip Schneider (BS ’70) earned an Honorary Membership Award from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ Board of Directors.
Personal Updates and Check-Ins
Julie Asmus (PharmD ’06): “I have been battling metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer for two years now. I’m still working part-time at the Fort Atkinson hospital pharmacy. God, my family, friends, and my work family ‘pharmily,’ give me the strength to keep going, and I am blessed to be still working and able to help others.”
Dave Wuest (BS ’92): “I’ve been retired from the pharmaceutical industry for over three years now after spending 28 years between Roche, Amgen, and Gilead. I now spend my time making wine and competing in physique competitions. I recently won first place in the over 50 category for the first time. Go Badgers!!”
Pam Berry (Benzschawel) (BS ’83): “Happily retired and living in Appleton, Wis.”
Raymond Kastner (BS ’82): “Retired and moved to Davenport, Fla.”
John Schloemer (BS ’73): “Comfortably retired since 2016 from hospital pharmacy. I’m enjoying my six grandchildren and volunteering at several organizations, including Boy Scouts, which is keeping me young.”
Leo Nickasch (BS ’71): “I turned 80 this year and have been retired from practice for 10 years this month, and I’m loving it.”
Jim Herrick (BS ’68, MS ’70): “Sara and I recently moved into senior independent housing in Saint Paul, Minn., but have kept the cabin in northern Wisconsin. We frequently spend time with our three kids and seven grandkids that all live in the area. Now that COVID is over, we are traveling more and having the time of our lives.”
David Henning (BS ’67, MS ’69): “Enjoying retirement by visiting my first grandson (5/2021) and hiking the Ice Age Trail (550 out of 1200 miles completed). I have kept my streak of canoe tripping annually in the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness to 50 consecutive years. My granddaughter Kristin is graduating in June with a Biology degree. She will be starting pharmacy school at the University of Washington in the fall.”
In Memoriam
Michael Rubino (MS ’78) passed away in August 2023. Born in Connecticut, he earned his master’s degree from the School of Pharmacy, and then returned to his home state, where he spent much of his career with the University of Connecticut Health Center, before also serving at St. Vincent’s Medical Center and Hartford Hospital, where he stayed until his retirement in 2016. In addition to being an active pharmacist, he was also a devoted father, enjoying family vacations to ski and visit Cape Cod. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching basketball, traveling, volunteering, attending concerts, and playing drums in a band.
Duane Oestereich (BS ’60) passed away in April 2023. He practiced pharmacy in Fond du Lac and Appleton, Wis., and Sarasota, Fla. Outside of the pharmacy, he was a Wisconsin sports fan, racing enthusiast, and boater, often inviting friends and family for summer boat rides.
Peter Morton (BS ’61) passed away in August 2023. Born in Neenah, Wis., he went to work at his family’s pharmacy, Morton Drug Company, after graduating from the School of Pharmacy. A passionate pharmacist, he served as president of the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin from 1977 to 1978 and relished the opportunity to care for his patients and community. He enjoyed spending time at his cottage with family, volunteering, traveling, and more.
William Mallatt (BS ’60) passed away in April 2023. Known for his kindness, he worked with his father, Adolph, at Mallatt Pharmacy on Monroe Street in Madison. He was very active in his community, serving the UW Arboretum board, W Club, Downtown Kiwanis, and UW Sports Hall of Fame. A sports enthusiast, he played fast-pitch softball until he was 60 and organized touch football games in his neighborhood.
Donald Schrank (BS ’58) passed away in April 2023. He grew up in Milwaukee, Wis., and returned there after graduating pharmacy school to practice for nearly 50 years at the Thompson Serve-U Pharmacy in Shorewood, Wis. He was a devoted husband and father, going antiquing and visiting estate sales with his wife, and going on adventures and nature walks or sharing laughs with his sons.
Mara Coon (BS ’58) passed away in July 2023. Born in Latvia, she and her family fled to Germany during World War II. After the war, she spent five years in a Displaced Persons Camp, and in 1950 was sponsored to relocate to Ripon, Wis. Pursing an interest in pharmacy, she graduated from the School of Pharmacy after completing high school, and then worked as a pharmacist at Kmart for the majority of her career. She was a family-focused mother and grandmother, with a passion for reading, knitting, sewing, and gardening.
Mayme Canham (BS ’57) passed away in April 2023. She was born in California but attended high school in Japan before returning to the U.S., to a small Wisconsin town, in 1951. She met her husband, Donald (MS ’56, PhD ’60) at the School of Pharmacy, and the two practiced pharmacy in Washington, D.C. before putting down roots in Montana. After raising their two daughters, she returned to practice at Palmer’s Drug Store until she retired at age 90.
Dino Laurenzi (BS ’53) passed away in May 2023. He grew up in Kenosha, Wis., as a child of first-generation immigrants. After graduating from the School of Pharmacy, he served in the Medical Service Corps in Alabama, where he met his wife. After they were discharged, they returned to Kenosha and opened General Drug Pharmacy in 1961. He was an active member of the Roly Rosary Parish, Kenosha Pharmacy Association, Elks Club, Kenosha Country Club, and the Italian American Club and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Kenosha Aging Society.
John Jacobson (BS ’53) passed away in July 2023. After graduating from the School of Pharmacy, he spent his career practicing in Madison, Wis., at Rennebohm Drug Stores and Walgreens for more than 40 years. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, Carol, and three children, and had varied hobbies, including attending the Madison Sports Car Club, cycling, running, and sailing.
Kenneth Geiger (BS ’53) passed away in May 2023. He grew up in Milwaukee, Wis., and after graduating from the School of Pharmacy, he practiced in Green Bay and Oconto Falls, before purchasing a pharmacy in Gillett, which he ran as Russell Drugs until 1997. In addition to pharmacy, he also served as an alderman in Oconto Falls and enjoyed traveling, woodworking, and spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Arnold Willis (BS ’48) passed away in August 2023, at age 100. After graduating from high school in Platteville, Wis., he served in World War II, flying 35 bombing missions and earning the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medal with three bronze stars and a conduct metal, as well as the Distinguished Service Award as a member of the 303rd Bombardment Group. In 1945, he returned to Wisconsin and pursued pharmacy school through the GI Bill. He purchased Brown’s Drug Store in Evansville, Wis., changed the name to Willis Rexall Drugs, and operated it for 25 years.
