The Wisconsin Society of Pharmacy Students (WSPS) MedDrop initiative has had a productive year educating the community about the safety of medications. During the past two semesters, volunteers helped collect medications that were no longer needed at Oakwood Village Retirement Community and MedDrop scoop events. The scoop events combined an ice cream social with the opportunity to share literature and information about the program. Additionally, students partnered with the UW Police Department and area Drug Enforcement Agency. Student volunteers taught community members about the dangers of medications at the Lincoln and Waunakee Wellness Fairs. A new event scheduled for this summer is participation in National Safe Night Out in Verona and Middleton.
The MedDrop program is part of the Madison and Dane County Safe Communities program and provides education and resources to dispose of leftover and expired prescriptions.
