Research on beta blockers continues with funding

Orly Vardeny, assistant professor (CHS) in the Pharmacy Practice Division, was awarded funding from GlaxoSmithKline to study associations of beta adrenergic receptor polymorphisms on insulin resistance in patients with hypertension being treated with specific beta blockers.

Some beta blockers can adversely affect blood glucose and insulin sensitivity. This research furthers Vardeny’s previous work examining the potential role of genetic variations within the beta adrenergic receptor on these metabolic effects.
