Research makes strides in pain relief for pets

Initial studies are promising for injectable liposome-encapsulated opioids developed by Tim Heath, associate professor emeritus in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Division, and Lisa Krugner-Higby, clinical instructor, UW Research Animal Resources Center.

The drug formulation is the first extended-release product that delivers opioids continuously and effectively to the patient, providing steady, long-lasting pain relief and possibly shorter hospital stays for animals undergoing surgery. The work is featured in the October 2008 issue of The Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
