The School of Pharmacy offers four certificate programs. All are open to professional (PharmD) and graduate (MS/PhD) students in the School of Pharmacy. Each includes an array of core and elective course offerings that complement the PharmD program. Certificates are not stand-alone, as you must be an active School of Pharmacy student to enroll.
Consumer Health Advocacy Certificate
Today, as health systems grow more and more complex, health consumers — individually and collectively — increasingly turn to adept advocates to help them navigate medical, legal, employment, financial and psychosocial issues, and improve the systems and instruments that support health care access and quality.
A guiding principle of this certificate program from the Center for Patient Partnerships is that consumer perspectives must be included in any health care performance improvement initiative. The Consumer Health Advocacy (CHA) Certificate will provide students with:
- key knowledge of health consumer perspectives
- advanced health advocacy competencies
- tools to strategically advance health care reform efforts through inter-professional collaboration, policy initiatives, and systemic interventions.
The certificate is available to students in the Schools of Pharmacy, Medicine & Public Health, Nursing, and Law.
Global Health Certificate
The complex, existential problems challenging today’s world — emerging infectious diseases and pandemics, food insecurity and starvation, climate change impacts on health, antimicrobial resistance, fundamental inequities in access to nutrition and healthcare — transcend national boundaries and require expertise and perspectives from across the biomedical, social, and physical sciences to achieve creative solutions. Thus, there is a need for global health knowledge and skills not only among traditional healthcare providers, but also for professionals throughout multiple disciplines.
It is said that “global health takes all of us,” and the Graduate/Professional and Capstone Certificates in Global Health Online give traditional and non-traditional students the expertise to effectively work across cultures and disciplines to improve health for all. The 11-credit, largely asynchronous, online format provides maximum flexibility for students to complete the certificate effectively within the context of primary degree, work and/or family responsibilities.
The University of Wisconsin–Madison Graduate/Professional Certificate in Global Health Online is designed for students who want to:
- advance their knowledge and capabilities in global health and collaborate with underserved communities globally and locally
- be prepared to address health challenges and disparities in a context of cultural diversity
- learn about a wide breadth of global health topics that transcend national boundaries, with an emphasis on lower-middle income settings and underserved populations
- be taught by UW–Madison health professionals who have decades of in-country global health experience
- work with faculty and on-site mentors to complete a culminating field experience and understand disease, health, and well-being through multiple lenses
The certificate will provide students with knowledge of population-based disease prevention and control strategies, as well as a broad understanding of the upstream determinants of health, health systems and policies. Students will be equipped with the ability to collaborate with partners to help lead advances in global health, from small local projects to multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral initiatives to enhance the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities around the world.
