Graduate students awarded prestigious fellowships

Grant Buchanan and Richard Gantt have been awarded Pre-Doctoral Fellowships in the Pharmaceutical Sciences by the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE) for the 2009-10 academic year.

Buchanan, from Midland, Texas, began his graduate work in 2006 and studies in the laboratory of Richard Hsung, professor in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Division. His AFPE research proposal is titled “Development of Inter and Intramolecular Aza-[3+3] Annulation Reactions and their Application in Natural Product Synthesis.”

Gantt, from Marietta, Georgia, in his third year of graduate school, studies in the laboratory of Jon Thorson, professor in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Division. Gantt’s AFPE-funded research is titled “Chemoenzymatic Synthesis of Nucleotide Diphosphate Sugars and their Applications in Drug Discovery.” Only twenty new AFPE pre-doctoral fellowships were awarded nationally this year.
