Extra genes protect against Parkinson’s disease

Research by Jeff Johnson, professor in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Division, and UW-Madison colleagues Pei-Chun Chen, Marcelo Vargas and Delinda Johnson, impacts the progression of Parkinson’s disease.

Drawing local and national attention, the study published in the February 2 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicates the introduction of additional Nrf-2 gene prevents cell death in mouse models. Chen, a research associate in Johnson’s lab, was lead author of the study.
