May: Congratulations to group members, Dr. LTC Victor Jaffett and Soren Rozema, both of whom graduated this month. Victor is the first Ph.D. graduate from the Golden lab and will start his academic appointment at West Point this Fall. Soren completed his undergraduate degree at UW-Madison and will be starting graduate school at Yale University this Fall. We wish them both well on their journey! Good luck!

March 21st: Congratulations to Muhammad Khalifa on being selected as a recipient of the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE) Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Pharmaceutical Sciences! Muhammad was selected from an exceptionally talented pool of applicants. Way to go, Muhammad!!
March 20th: Congratulations to Victor Jaffett, Dr. Alok Nerurkar and Dr. Xufeng Cao on their published article, which graces the cover of Org. Biomol. March 15th: Congratulations to Soren Rozema on his selection for the ACS Division of Organic Chemistry Undergraduate Award from the UW-Madison Department of Chemistry! The award recognizes one outstanding graduating student from each participating school who has demonstrated significant aptitude in the field of organic chemistry. The award consists of a certificate, a letter of commendation from the ACS Organic Division, and a one-year free membership to the Organic Division. Well done, Soren!

August 29th: We wished farewell to our group’s first member, Dr. Xufeng Cao. He’s been an extraordinary colleague to have as part of our team and moved mountains as part of the alphavirus project team. He will be missed. Good luck, Xufeng!!
August 24th: Congratulations to Ms. Jhewelle Fitz-Henley on passing her preliminary exam and officially becoming a dissertator.
August 21st :The PIs of Team Alphavirus met up at NIH to attend a workshop on infectious disease and the blood-brain barrier. It was good to see some of our compounds being used by other groups as benchmarks for investigating VEEV/WEEV/EEEV.

June 7th: Several members of the group represented their work at the Pharmaceutics Graduate Student Research Meeting (PGSRM) at the University of Minnesota from June 7th – June 9th. Mr. Gang Yan (3rd yr GS), Mr. Muhammad Khalifa (3rd yr GS), Ms. Jhewelle Fitz-Henley (2nd yr GS), and Ms. Bereket Zekarias (2nd yr GS) were in attandance with others from UW-Madison.

June 5th: Congratulations to US Army supported, 4th year graduate student, Mr. Victor Jaffett, on his selection for promotion from the position of Major to Lieutenant Colonel! Victor is pursuing his Ph.D. in chemistry at UW-Madison through the U.S. Army Advanced Civil Schooling (ACS) program. Following the completion of his Ph.D. degree next Spring, he will be assigned to the United States Military Academy at West Point as an Assistant Professor.

April 17th: Congratulations to Mr. Soren Rozema, an undergraduate majoring in pharmacology, toxicology and chemistry, for being honorably mentioned in the 2018 Barry Goldwater Scholarship competition. Two University of Wisconsin-Madison students were awarded Goldwater Scholarships for undergraduate excellence in the sciences, and two more (one of which was our own Soren Rozema) were named honorable mentions. The Goldwater Scholarship is considered the most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering in America. Way to go, Soren! April 6th-8th: The Golden group was proud to represent UW-Madison as part of a delegation to the 2018 MIKI conference in Chicago. The UW-Madison School of Pharmacy was warmly welcomed as a member this year, joining Minnesota (M), Illinois (I), Kansas (K) and Iowa (I) in this student-run, highly successful, regional medicinal chemistry meeting. The Wisconsin “W” was added to the MIKI logo, shown below.
The Golden group brought 7 representatives to MIKI 2018, each with a poster covering active projects underway. Well done, everyone!

A proposal submitted by the UW-Madison Medicinal Chemistry Center was awarded through a highly competitive UW2020 WARF Discovery Initiative. The project seeks to establish a novel, drug-like compound library on the UW-Madison campus that will be accessible to scientific collaborators across a diverse range of therapeutic interests.
