Four pharmacology-toxicology juniors earned Hilldale Undergraduate/Faculty Fellowships for 2016-17 as awards were announced late last week. The students (their respective faculty mentor), and the title of their Hilldale projects are as follows:

  • Srikar Adibhatla (Tim Bugni, associate professor, pharmaceutical sciences), “Structure Elucidation and Mechanism of Action Determination of a Putative Novel Antibiotic Discovered through a Co-Culture Method”
  • Anders Lindstedt (Matyas Sandor, pathology and laboratory medicine), “The Role of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) after Ischemic Stroke”
  • Jessica Smoko (Arash Bashirullah, associate professor, pharmaceutical sciences), “Characterization of a Novel Pathway that Regulates Insulin Secretion”
  • Nick Yan (Elizabeth Craig, professor, biochemistry), “Characterizing the Interaction between the Essential Subunits, Pam16 and Tim44, of the Mitochondrial Protein Import Motor”

The Hilldale Fellowships support undergraduate research done in collaboration with UW–Madison faculty or research/instructional academic staff. Approximately 100 Hilldale awards are available each year. The student researcher receives $3,000, and faculty/staff research advisor receives $1000 to help offset research costs.
