Nanomedicine 1

UW-Madison Center for Nanomedicine

Introduction

Faculty in the Drug Delivery Core of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy (UW-SOP) have established research programs in the field of nanomedicine aimed at nanotechnology platforms for enabling and/or enhancing promising efforts in drug discovery and pre-clinical drug development.  Collaborative research on nanomedicine has been established between faculty in the Drug Delivery Core and researchers in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Division, UW-SOP, and the UW-Madison campus.

A major focus in the Drug Delivery Core has been placed on cancer nanomedicine, advancing drug delivery concepts in drug solubilization, site-specific drug delivery, and synergistic combination drug delivery. Given recent progress in nanomedicine at the UW-SOP, allied research in drug discovery and pre-clinical drug development on campus, and growing translational efforts at UW-Madison, the time is right for the establishment of a UW-SOP Center for Nanomedicine.

The UW-SOP Center for Nanomedicine seeks to unify, coordinate, and expand research and scholarship in collaborative efforts in nanotechnology. In addition to research initiatives in nanomedicine, the center will fulfill a critical educational role related to this interdisciplinary enterprise, making sure that graduate students are well prepared for contributions and careers in nanomedicine. The UW-SOP Center for Nanomedicine will also take a forward position in outreach in this expanding area of biomedical research, highlighting its central importance and implications for our society in a rapidly changing global economy.
