PAA President's Capsule: Time to Celebrate Spring!

After a long, challenging winter, the beginning of a new season offers hope and new opportunity. Spring is a time of renewal—a time to remember you are alive, emerge from hibernation and sprout with new energy and focus.

The days are getting longer. The sun is shining more. Spring also is one of the most important times of the year at our School of Pharmacy as we celebrate our people and our programs. Last year, we honored 125 years of excellence at the school. The year focused on our successes, history and longstanding University of Wisconsin-Madison commitment to lead the profession.

PAA members are a diverse bunch, yet we are a group woven together as a professional family through our educational experiences at our school of Pharmacy. Some of our colleagues find joy in the promise that lobsters and crabs hold the key to understanding neurologic disorders as well as providing gastronomic delight. Another group of pioneers in pharmacy revel in knowing that they have led in practice innovation and residency training for more than 45 years. Some alumni have travelled around the world to learn and share new ideas for providing care with our Thai colleagues. Yet others have found a way transform the loss of golf balls to raise money and fund academic pursuits.

I believe that this 126th year holds even more promise for alumni of the UW School of Pharmacy. We begin 2009 with the traditional celebrations of commencement and the White Coat Ceremony as many new members mark completion of major milestones in a professional journey. This spring, take time to honor new graduates, reflect on your own personal or professional achievement and focus on renewal. Plant a seed by funding a scholarship. Apply some fertilizer to your contributions to the scholarship fund by donating through the People and Programs Campaign. Your contribution will be matched 50 cents to your dollar. Water new growth in the profession by mentoring a student. Take time to nurture your own practice and grow. Learn a new skill.

As a member of PAA, you are part of that elite group responsible for ensuring that the school has the needed resources to make sure people and programs are in place to continue what you have started… and make it better. Wake up from a long cold winter. Enjoy the promise of spring. Renew. Get energized. And watch what happens to our people and our programs!
