Now in its thirteenth year, the Pharmacy Alumni Association (PAA) Scholarship Golf tournament held June 17, 2011 raised more than $10,000 for UW-Madison School of Pharmacy scholarships. With a baker's dozen track record, the annual event has amassed more than $175,000 for the PAA scholarship fund.
Among the more than 76 golfers gathering at the Meadows of Six Mile Creek in Waunakee, Wis., on a stellar pre-summer day, were Kurt (B.S. '70) and Christian Holm (DPH-2), father and son, alum and current student of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy.
While the tourney is a return event for the Holms, the pride in their participation and alma mater is evident—whether Kurt introducing his son to fellow alums, or them mugging for the camera with Bucky Badger, who made an appearance during the putting contest. Kurt, a graduate of the B.S. five year program, is currently Director of Pharmacy for Morton Pharmacy in the Fox Valley, with responsibility for 15 pharmacies. A lifetime PAA member, he knows first hand the significance of supporting the education of future pharmacy students. When asked about Christian's choice to attend UW-Madison, Kurt noted, "aside from the fact that he made a choice that was best for him, UW-Madison is a great university that will prepare him for a fulfilling career," and give Kurt an excuse to come to Madison more often.
As for Christian, he chose Madison because he wanted to remain close to family and friends—especially the friendships formed while obtaining his undergraduate degree. "And honestly, I never considered going anywhere else," said Holm. "I love the Big Ten atmosphere and the school is one of the best in the nation."
Kurt stays in touch with pharmacy alums and colleagues through attendance at pharmacy meetings and seminars, Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin (PSW) activities, and UW-Madison alumni events. He reiterates that he is very active in the PSW because it's important to stay involved in, and contribute to, the profession of pharmacy as it continuously evolves.
The Holms are able to golf together at least a couple of times a week during the summer, and per Kurt, Christian is the better golfer. Whether on the golf course or in the board room, the father-son duo will continue to explore ways to give back to the profession and the next generation of pharmacists.
