Professor Guillory, age 76, made a gift of nearly $130,000 through the UW
Foundation for the benefit of the School of Pharmacy. At his age, the guaranteed
rate of return is 6.3 percent, which will generate a fixed payment of $8,182 per
year for the rest of Guillory’s life. The remainder will then go to establish two
new funds at the School.
“When I was a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, I was privileged to have been awarded a teaching assistantship, and later, a fellowship. Without those, I would not have been able to afford to attend the University,” said J. Keith Guillory (MS ’60, Ph.D., PHM ’61). Guillory is Professor Emeritus, Division of Pharmaceutics at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy.
I felt an obligation to provide the School of Pharmacy with some funds that could help to ease the financial burdens future graduate students will face,” said Guillory. “When deciding on the form my gift would take, I considered the tax benefits of the annuity, and the fact that income from my certificates of deposit were near an all-time low, whereas the annuity paid 6.3 percent. The annuity provided a reliable source of income that will be useful in paying the monthly fees associated with my new residence, Oaknoll Retirement Residence. I also wanted to leave a legacy to the School of Pharmacy that would partially repay the school for the financial assistance I received while enrolled there, a teaching assistantship and a research fellowship.”
“I sincerely hope that my contribution will enable the school to continue to attract
quality students to its graduate programs,” said Guillory.
